Washington Redskins News and History:
George
Preston MArshall founded the Redskins franchise in 1932 in Boston,
Massachusetts. They were formerly the Boston Braves but did not make a
name for themselves until they moved to Washington D.C. in 1937.
Between 1936 and 1942 Ray Flaherty was the head coach and guided his
team to seven consecutive winning records and three times to play in
the NFL Championship Game.
From 1946 to 1970 the Redskins posted
only four winning records and had 11 different head coaches. In 1971
former Los Angeles Rams coach George Allen took over as head coach of
the Redskins. Mr. Allen turned this team around leading the Redskins to
nine recorded victories. The Washington Redskins went to Super Bowl VII
in 1973 but were defeated by the Miami Dolphins. In 1976 the Redskins
got the rights of players Joe Theismann and John Riggins.
Former
San Diego Chargers assistant coach Joe Gibbs was hired to perfect the
Redskins’ passing game in 1981. Gibbs led his team to three more Super
Bowl Championships. In 1983 they defeated the Miami Dolphins, 1988, the
Denver Broncos, and 1992, the Buffalo Bills.
Gibbs left after
the 1992 Super Bowl win and was replaced by Richie Petitbone and later
Norv Turner. Since the mid-90's the Redskins have been a weak team in
the NFL except for a division win in 99. The Washington Redskins
football team is one of the five teams in the Eastern Division of the
National Football Conference (NFC) of the National Football League
(NFL). The Redskins home stadium is the FedEx Field in Landover,
Maryland.
Washington’s many stars included quarterbacks Joe
Theismann and Sonny Jurgensen and wide receivers Art Monk and Charley
Taylor, running back John Riggins and saftey Ken Houston.
Redskins Hall of Fame Members: quarterback Sammy Baugh, halfback Cliff Battles, end Wayne Millner, and tackle Turk Edwards.
