Indianapolis Colts news and history: Colts
football got its start in Baltimore. Professional football in Maryland
dates to 1947, when the Miami Seahawks of the All-America Football
Conference (AAFC) moved to Baltimore and became the Colts.
The Colts were reborn in 1953 when the NFL's Dallas Texans moved to Baltimore and took the name Colts.
The
2004 season ended almost exactly the way the 2003 season had, with the
New England Patriots pummeling the Colts, in the cold at Foxboro, and
knocking them out of the playoffs.
After a year in which the
offense broke numerous team and league records, the Colts could manage
to score only one field goal in their final game, losing 20-3. For the
second year in a row, Peyton Manning was named the league's Most
Valuable Player and his 49 regular-season touchdowns broke a record
that Dan Marino had held since 1984. The wide receiving trio of Marvin
Harrison, Reggie Wayne and Brandon Stokley each had at least 10
touchdowns and more than 1,000 yards for the season - also a league
first. Edgerrin James ended the season ranked fourth in the NFL with
1,548 yards, an average of 4.6 yards per carry. And although questions
continued to surround the defense, Dwight Freeney led the league with
16 sacks. RCA Dome stadium is the home of the Indianapolis Colts.
